1. Ferrus Manus: The Iron Gorgon

1.1 Origins and Early Life

Ferrus Manus, the Primarch of the Iron Hands, was born on the inhospitable planet of Medusa. He was raised in the harsh conditions of the planet, where the strong and adaptable thrived. This upbringing forged him into a leader and warrior of unparalleled resolve and strength.

1.2 Leadership and Legacy

Ferrus Manus led the Iron Hands with an iron will, emphasizing the pursuit of physical and mental perfection through cybernetic enhancements. His leadership during the Great Crusade earned him respect and renown among the Primarchs.

1.3 Tragic Demise

Ferrus Manus met a tragic end during the Horus Heresy at the hands of his own brother, Fulgrim of the Emperor's Children. His death marked a pivotal and heartbreaking moment in the chapter's history, with lasting consequences.

2. Chapter Masters of the Iron Hands

2.1 The Stalwart Gorgon: Chapter Master Autek Mor

Chapter Master Autek Mor was a respected leader who upheld the chapter's values of resolve and perfection. His tenure saw the Iron Hands' continued struggle against their weaknesses. Later he became the leader of the Red Talons.

2.2 Belic Tor: The Iron Council and Beyond

Belic Tor was a pivotal figure who brought together the Iron Council, a group of Chapter Masters, to lead the Iron Hands. His leadership marked a shift in the chapter's approach to warfare.

2.3 Kardan Stronos: Iron Father Turned Leader

Kardan Stronos, known as the "Iron Thane," rose to leadership after the tragic death of Belic Tor. He continues to lead the chapter with a focus on unrelenting determination and pursuit of perfection. Stronos has held the title of chapter master of the Iron Hands for the last 300 years.

3. Iron Fathers and Prominent Techmarines

3.1 Iron Father Feirros: Master of the Forge

Iron Father Feirros is a master of technology, serving as the chapter's Master of the Forge. His expertise in bionics and cybernetics is renowned, and he carries the sacred standard of the Iron Hands. Feirros has close ties to Kardan Stronos and is the first of the Iron Council to cross the Rubicon Primaris. Therefore, to date, the Iron Hands have no official model for their Primarch, as Feirros is the Master of the Forge and not the chapter master of the Iron Hands.

3.2 Iron Father Kristos: The Maker

Iron Father Kristos, also known as "The Maker," is a revered Techmarine with a deep understanding of machine spirits. His creations and innovations have left an indelible mark on the chapter. Kristos is relevant for rebuilding Clan Raukaan and creating a rift within the Iron Hands. Iron Hands are often unpopular with players and in the lore due to committing war crimes to win based on logic. Kristos is the manifestation of this as he sacrificed Raven Guard brothers knowingly and ultimately fell to the Chaos god Slaneesh.

While leaders like Stronos, Ferrus Manus, and Feirros show the importance of the balance between machine and emotion, Kristos shows the consequences of fully giving in to cold hard logic and bionics.

3.3 Iron Father Gdolkin

Iron Father Gdolkin, a controversial figure within the chapter, sought to push the boundaries of bionics to new extremes. His actions and experiments stirred divisions among the Iron Hands. Gdolkin himself did not agree with the decisions of the Iron Council during the 13th Black Crusade.

From a lore perspective, this is the right Iron Hand character to choose if your friends play a lot of Chaos Knights. During the 13th Black Crusade Gdolkin successfully managed to destroy a host of them in the warp storm Araken stationed on the planet Crucible which was corrupted by Chaos.

Iron Thane Vaylund Kal

4. Sons of Medusa: A Chapter Forged by Adversity

4.1 Iron Thanes

One of the most popular successor chapters of the Iron Hands are the Sons of Medusa. Due to their similar paint scheme, they are often mistaken for Salamanders. The Iron Thanes are the equivalent of the members of the Iron Council for the Iron Hands. Two known Iron thanes are Mazos Dhule and Vaylund Cal.

5. Red Talons: Ruthless Enigmas

5.1 Bassan Terak

Bassan Terak was a Red Talon Iron Father in service during the 32nd millennium. From there he would become the leader of the 3rd company of the Red Talons.

If you wanted to build a red tech marine from the Primairs Techmarine kit or from an Iron Father kit from Forgeworld then this might be a good place to start for you.

5.2 Ancient Claviger Khalon

Ancient Claviger Khalon is a Leviathan pattern siege dreadnought who was an experiment to build the ultimate siege-breaking Dreadnought based on this chassis. Due to his mental instability, he was assigned to Autek Mor in Clan Morragul which later became the Red Talon successor chapter.

If you want to build and paint a siege-breaking Leviathan associated with the Iron Hands in red, then this is a character to go for. Unfortunately, you can only play the Leviathan Dreadnought model in the Horus Heresy Tabletop game as Games Workshop decided in the tenth edition to make this model a legend for Warhammer 40K. This means you can not use its rules in an official Warhammer 40K tournament game.

5.3 Ironwrought Veur

Ironwrought Veur is a Devastator Legionairy on board the Red Talon ship during the battle of Istvaan 5. He moved on to become one of the first Iron Hands Astartes in the ranks of the Red Talons successor chapter led by Autek Mor.

If you would like a character Devastator painted red associated to the Iron Hands chapter, then this would be a good character to go for.

6. Conclusion: Unyielding Heroes in a Grim Universe

The heroes of the Iron Hands Chapter, from its stoic leaders to its innovative Techmarines, exemplify the chapter's commitment to unwavering resolve and the relentless pursuit of perfection. In a universe teetering on the edge of destruction, these characters stand as bulwarks against the encroaching darkness, embodying the unwavering spirit of the Space Marines in the grim, dark future of Warhammer 40,000. Their stories, deeds, and legacies add depth to the chapter's lore and continue to shape the narrative of the Imperium of Man.
